Trip to Albania

Albania looks like a missing piece in a puzzle as it is still a relatively unknown travel destination in Europe. But it will not stay that way. Although the country is not the Amalfi Coast, it has a unique charm of its own.

Various civilizations, including the Byzantines, Greeks, Ottomans, Romans, and Venetians, have ruled Albania throughout its history. In the aftermath of World War II, it became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. The country threw open its doors hesitantly after the collapse of a particularly severe form of communism in 1991.

Albania is a member of NATO and an official candidate for membership in the European Union. It has one natural, two cultural, and one mixed World Heritage site. The ancient city of Butrint in the south of the country was its first site to be listed in 1992.

The country lies between Montenegro to the north, Macedonia to the east, Greece to the south, and only 72 kilometers / 45 miles from Italy. It has almost 500 kilometers / 310 miles of coastline.

"(Getting the truth in the New York Post has been as) difficult as finding a good hamburger in Albania." – Paul Newman, an American actor.
