Governed as an absolute monarchy with the pope at its head, Vatican City is the world's smallest independent state, making it one-eighth the size of Central Park in New York. The city-state is home to a unique collection of artistic and architectural masterpieces.

The Vatican is a city within a city, located in the center of Rome, the capital of Italy. It has its banking system, pharmacy, post office, press, radio station, telephone system, and the Pontifical Swiss Guard responsible for the pope's safety. Almost all resources, such as energy, food, gas, and water, must be imported from other countries to be available.

All Vatican residents have dual citizenship. As of 2019, 453 people lived in Vatican City, 246 of whom are citizens. The number included cardinals, Swiss guards, clerics, a nun, and the pope.

"The Vatican has to strike a difficult balance between running a country and running a religious institution." – Ian Caldwell, an American novelist.

St. Peter's Cathedral is the Vatican's principal fascination and one of the main attractions of the surrounding Rome. Outside and inside its walls, you can see numerous masterpieces of almost all famous Italian architects of the Middle Ages. The Vatican Museums are also remarkable and extensive, known primarily for the magnificent ceilings and halls with paintings by Raphael and Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.

For lovers of outdoor walks, there is an occasion to stroll through the luxurious Vatican Gardens and climb Mount Monte Mario, which offers a beautiful view of the Vatican and Rome.
