Metelkova – Ljubljana's Alternative Culture Centre

Metelkova is a flourishing cultural hub in central Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, with creative studios, quiet cafés, intriguing exhibitions, fine events, and live performances; it is a great place to explore alternative cultural activities. The crowd is diverse, ranging from students and underground music enthusiasts to professionals out for a night out and tourists.

The location near Metelkova Street was previously the Yugoslav People's Army headquarters. The complex of barracks, stores, and courtyards in Ljubljana was decommissioned in 1989 after Slovenia left the union. It was semi-abandoned until 1993. Following that, some well-known and lesser-known Slovenian artists transformed the former Austro-Hungarian army barracks, built in the late 1800s, into a thriving place for a free creative spirit through interventions.

As an alternative art fan and a hippie at soul, I enjoy visiting spots like Metelkova in Ljubljana, Užupis in Vilnius (Lithuania), and Christiania in Copenhagen (Denmark). They are unusual and odd, but in a good way, and have an intriguing vibe, with walls covered in urban graffiti art and quirky buildings with barred windows. These locations are not places I'd hang out night after night, but they are great for a few drinks and unforgettable experiences.
